A good Elizabeth I oak tester bed, Gloucestershire, circa 1590.
The tester with twelve panels, each carved with a pointed-leaf quatrefoil centred by a four-petal flowerhead, and with nulled-carved frieze rails, the headboard unusually with two figural panels, one with Prudentia, representing wisdom, insight and knowledge, the other possibly Orpheus, seated next to a deer, representing longevity, each within a leafy-carved arcade, spaced by broad stylized leaf-lattice carved applied boards, atop a pair of lozenge-carved panels, enclosed within a matching arcade, atop four plain panels, the end-posts with leafy-scale carved pillars emanating from a cup-and-cover gadrooned-carved bulbous turning and a large elongated cup-and-cover palmette-carved turning, on a tall plinth carved to simulate panelling, 157cm wide, 214cm high, 231cm long.
